The NormaTec is available at Reddy Care's Great Neck and Farmingdale locations. In a randomized control trial, multilayer compression therapy (the same compression gradient that NormaTec employs) caused immediate significant reductions in post-operative edema for total knee replacements, even being more effective than ice packs in reducing swelling immediately post-operatively. All of these factors reduce inflammation and decrease soreness in the knee. This helps prevent leg swelling and, to a lesser extent, blood clots. Compression stockings gently squeeze your legs to move blood up your legs. Research has shown NormaTec compression to lessen pain sensitivity, increase range of motion, clear metabolites passively, decrease muscle fatigue after exercise, and improve endothelial function and blood flow in the legs. Medical Encyclopedia Compression stockings Compression stockings You wear compression stockings to improve blood flow in the veins of your legs. This greatly enhances the movement of fluid from the limbs after surgery. The Normatec’s pulsing action is more effective because it mimics the muscle pumps of the leg. The SCD is a machine that pumps air into a sleeve that goes around your leg. Compression stockings often used after a total knee replacement use static compression, which just squeezes the fluid out of the limb. The most valuable element of the Normatec is the pulsing massage pattern it uses. Improving circulation helps promote healing by bringing freshly oxygenated blood to the area and removing cellular waste. After a total knee replacement, healing tissues require oxygen and nutrients in order to repair themselves. Coverage for home use of pneumatic compression devices is available within the following three diagnostic categories: Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). Mattresses: Covered only where hospital bed is medically necessary. The Normatec is an active compression system designed to improve blood flow and remove excess fluids from an affected limb. Covered (See Pneumatic Compression Devices, 280.6 of this manual.) Massage Devices: Deny - personal comfort items not primarily medical in nature (1861(n) and 1862(a)(6) of the Act). The intention is to force excess lymph fluid out of the limb and into central body. The application of active compression is an important modality that can be used to help with the recovery from a total knee replacement. These pumps use compressed air to apply pressure to the affected limb. The sleeve is intermittently inflated and deflated with varying cycle times and pressures. Although total knee replacements have become quite common, this does not lessen the recovery and the impact of the surgery on the patient. Pneumatic compression devices typically consist of an inflatable sleeve that is placed on the arm or leg, and an electrical pneumatic pump that fills the sleeve with compressed air. Total Knee Replacements constitute one of the most common surgeries performed by orthopedic surgeons.
